High Life
Experimentos en condenados a muerte, en una versión futurista de tristes experiencias del pasado; la peste de Tebas y la esterilidad de las mujeres, en una variante interestelar de la tragedia griega; perversión de la ciencia, bajo la figura del fantasma erotómano, con derivas inquietantes sobre la inseminación artificial y la reprogenética. Finalmente, un horizonte posible ante el estrago, en la línea de Children of Men (Cuarón, 2006). Claire Dénis propone un film que por momentos es aburrido y pretencioso, en sintonía con el tormento circular de sus personajes. Presenta hechos ambiguos en cuanto a las metas de esta misión-castigo, que conjuga investigación científica, experimentación con seres humanos y pena. Todo ello en el absurdo de un micromundo a la deriva hacia un agujero negro real y metafórico. ¿Por qué la primera prisionera que se aventura a ese gap queda aplanada, pero al final se abre una hiancia para los personajes? Los interrogantes permanecen y la película nos abandona dejándonos en la incertidumbre de este padre y esta hija, a la deriva del cosmos. La nave con los perros, evocación sacrificial del asesinato de una niña en el pasado, es otro de los misterios a develar. El estilo informal, con actores y actrices que por momentos parecen improvisar sobre la marcha, sugiere a la vez un experimento cinematográfico. Como en toda empresa incierta de pensamiento-cine, hay que prestar atención a los detalles. En este caso, lo mejor es la beba, lejos.

She Is Inseminating: Reflections on Claire Dénis’ Science Fiction Film High Life (2018)
Asked about the meaning of sexuality, violence and the transgression of taboos in her films, Claire Denis replied: "For me, films show the secret of life". High life, her last film is set in a spaceship reminiscent of a prison. The crew consists of former prisoners who had been sentenced to death and decided to take part in a scientific experiment in space. Among them is a physician, played by Juliette Binoche, who is obsessed with the idea of breeding a child who is resistant to the radioactive rays in space. She inseminates the female members of the crew against their will and actually a female fetus survives: the daughter of Monte, the monk, played by Robert Pattinson. They are the only ones who survive the journey to the event horizon of a black hole. In the film violence and death predominate, but there are also scenes of great tenderness, especially in the relationship between father and daughter. The lecture examines the role of the death drive in Denis' cinematic representation of the secret of life, how it is imagined in relation to contemporary reproductive medicine and in relation to astrophysical concepts like high energy, black hole, event horizon and spacetime.
